DON'T LET THIS BE YOUR MSE WALL
Free Draining Seal (FDS) effectively prevents vegetation growth in MSE Wall Panels.
ABOUT FREE DRAINING SEAL (FDS)
The Free Draining Seal (FDS) is a patented composite product developed exclusively for MSE Walls to prevent vegetation growth in the joints of the MSE Wall Panels. This product consists of a 12-oz. non-woven filter fabric wrapped around a permeable foam core. The unique nature of the product lies in its ability to efficiently prevent vegetation growth while maintaining a “free-draining” joint. The permeability of the FDS product prevents hydrostatic pressure buildup behind MSE Walls while preventing growth of vegetation. By preventing this growth, FDS eliminates the need to spray costly and dangerous herbicide chemicals in the joints of MSE Wall Panels.
Easy Installation
Minimal Labor
Quick & Simple Installation Procedures
No Dangerous Herbicide Exposure
Plant Growth Prevention
Seal MSE joints from sunlight preventing photosynthesis
Prevents germination of seeds or spores in the joints
Allows water to pass through the permeable FDS but prevents passing of fine backfill
Proven Results
FDOT Maintenance District 5 personnel conducted a Test Section (ongoing) using the FDS on an MSE Wall along I-4. FDS succeeded in eliminating vegetation where it was installed. The FDS Product has been used on various FDOT and Municipal MSE Wall Projects (new construction and retrofit) throughout the State of Florida.
Specialty Construction Services
Provides technical information, pricing of the FDS, and supplies the FDS Material (FOB the project site). Free Draining Seal (FDS) can be installed to prevent harmful vegetation growth in MSE Wall panels for both new construction and retrofit structures.
New Construction
FDS can be applied to any new construction of MSE Walls, preventing any type of initial vegetation growth within MSE Wall Panel Joints.
RetroFit Maintenance
For existing MSE Walls, unwanted plant growth may have already taken place. With simply cleaning out the pre-existing growth, FDS can be installed to prevent additional vegetation in the joints.
Testing
In cooperation with FDOT Maintenance District 5 a Test Section was set up to evaluate the effectiveness of the FDS for a retrofit application on an MSE Wall along I-4 in Seminole County, Florida. The Test Section focused on sections where plants had been growing in the joints for an extended period of time. The vegetation was removed and test sections were established. The Test Section (in which FDS has been installed) has been evaluated for more than 7 years. The Test Section where the FDS has been installed does not have vegetation in the joints. The panels without FDS continue to have vegetation growing in the panel joints.
